These large, commonly black or black and red ants remove wood from tree stumps, inside the walls of homes or other wooden structures to burrow into and form a colony. Many times these ants inhabit homes without being seen. In the case that one is spotted, it is highly likely that there are many more and they are already established within the home.
Odorous House Ants
Odorous house ants make their nests in dark, secluded places in your home or business. These places can include under sinks, under doormats, inside your dishwasher, or even in your insulation. They prefer to eat the discarded sweets they can find around residential homes, but they will also eat other insects, seeds, plant secretions, and more. They cannot sting their predators, but they will defend themselves with a foul odor of what can be equated to blue cheese and coconut.
Named for their attraction to high-moisture habitats, moisture ants are smaller with a yellow to rusty brown color. They find wet wood and often like to take it to a place where there is good wood to support and create a nest. In houses, they could take cover in a damp areas, for example, where there may be a leak due to plumbing issues. The wet wood being placed on dry wood could cause the moisture to spread and rot the previously good wood, causing structural damage.
